Samsung Displays, a division of the Korean giant parent, said it will mass produce what it claims is the world’s first 90 Hz organic light emitting diode (OLED) laptops.
Currently, most laptops offer a 60 Hz refresh rate.
Initially, Samsung will mass produce 14 in, 90 Hz OLED displays for laptops starting in March. The need for a higher refresh rate in laptops comes from a growing desire among consumers for laptops due to the COVID-19 pandemic keeping many workers and computer owners at home because of the ongoing lockdowns worldwide.
This has increased the use of the machines for telework, online education, video streaming and gaming. Samsung calls this a major shift in the market for laptops with consumers wanting a better experience.
Rendering images at 90 times a second, the displays will help movements on laptops look more lifelike from a color perspective and the refresh rate updates will occur more frequently.
Samsung said the 90 Hz OLED refresh rate has a 10 times faster screen response time than other laptops on the market and is on par with that of 120 Hz LCD screens.
Samsung display tested the blur length of OLED screens and found that the image drag of a 90 Hz OLED and a 120 Hz LCD were 0.9 mm and 1 mm, respectively.
