The opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics will take place tomorrow and Intel is bringing what it claims is the first 8K video resolution over-the-top (OTT) broadcast to the Games.
While 4K video resolution continues its push to become the new standard, with more content being introduced daily. 8K remains a niche and an early adopter-centric technology. Intel will demonstrate its 8K video technology in collaboration with the Olympic Broadcasting Services (OBS) and other partners.
Throughout the Paris Games 2024, artificial intelligence (AI)-optimized broadcast servers will encode and compress OBS-produced 8K live signals that will be used across the internet. The servers will use Intel’s Xeon processors along with Intel AI accelerators and deep learning technology.
Compressed live raw feeds measuring 48 gigabits per second into a VVC-enabled livestream measuring 40 to 60 megabits per second. This is a compression ratio of about 1,000 times in about 400 milliseconds.
The 8K OTT broadcast will be delivered by OBS globally to connected PCs and other devices capable of streaming this high resolution.
