Video: Portable device improves mobility for ultrasound diagnostics

09 October 2020

A new portable, handheld ultrasound device is designed for medical imaging applications, both in the field and the clinic. The Butterfly iQ+ developed by Butterfly Network offers a long battery life and fast frame rates made possible by the Connecticut company’s Ultrasound-on-Chip™ technology.

The whole-body ultrasound system features Needle Viz technology to assist with imaging a needle during in-plane guided procedures. A new energy-efficient field programmable gate array helps to maintain 20% longer battery life compared with previous model iterations.

On-chip digital micro-beamforming enables 15% faster frame rates and 60% faster pulse repetition frequency to provide images of the heart, lungs and bladder with optimized clarity. High-performance shallow imaging capabilities help support fast, confident interventional decision-making, while deep imaging capabilities in the lung and deep cardiac presets allow for sharp details.

Designed for daily use by clinicians visiting multiple patients, the mobile device has been tested to MIL-STD-810G, faring well after 4-ft drops and experiencing 100 G shock pulses. It is also rated at IP67 for resilience against dust and water.
