Buttonless controller introduced for mobile gaming smartphones

22 July 2020

Sentons has launched a buttonless controller for smartphones for mobile gaming.

Called SDS Gamingbar, the buttonless technology transforms a device into a force-sensitive touch interface using ultrasonics. The first phone built with the buttonless technology is the new ROG Phone 3 from Tencent and ASUS, which is now available in China and uses the Gamingbar to power upgraded and hyper-responsive Airtriggers through interactive, bezel-less edges on the device.

The Gamingbar comes upgraded with five times gaming performance and a slide feature over the ROG phone that allows gamers to reload ammunition with a long-squeeze, control direction with a light swipe or fire with a tap.

Sentons said the Gamingbar allows opportunities for developers to create new ways to control gaming functions such as gesture control because they are no longer limited to physical buttons.

“The ability to tweak the functionality of AirTriggers through over-the-air firmware updates is another key advantage of the technology, as it allows us to constantly iterate and push the boundaries of mobile gaming without any hardware limitations,” said Bryan Chang, general manager of the Smartphone Business Unit at ASUS.
