Korean telecom KT Corp. has started using 5G self-driving carts at its logistics center allowing for a 50% reduction in how long employees’ travel and transport inventory.
KT claims it is the first telecom to use smart logistics vehicles and is using two types of 5G self-driving carts: the NarGo and TarGo.
KT is using its autonomous intelligent vehicle (AIV) service for NarGo and TarGo which is an integrated control system that processes instructions and assesses operating conditions with pre-installed maps and real-time information on automated carts.
"In preparation for the post-COVID era, technologies to minimize person-to-person contact are increasingly demanded throughout industries," said Choi Kangrim, head of KT's Connected Car Biz Center. "By applying AIV service based on our advanced communication networks and platforms in a wider scope of industries and leading relevant technological advancement.”
The AIV is minimizing person-to-person contact while improving productivity such as loading cellphone and other items for transportation with 47% less travel range by employees at KT’s Seobu Distribution Center.
The AIV technology automates driving control by collecting and analyzing data produced by different vehicles and can lead to real-time remote control of AIV cloud control centers developed by partner companies and various business sites. This helps minimize personal contact between employees but also large-scale distribution centers as well as small-scale warehouses.
KT will start using the 5G autonomous carts and control systems for small scale logistics operations at hospitals, libraries and various other industrial sites.
