A research vehicle developed by Nissan has completed a 230 mile self-navigated trip through the U.K. to promote research in autonomous vehicle technology. The Nissan LEAF employed GPS, radar, lidar and camera technologies to successfully navigate roundabouts, highways and roads with minimal markings. Enabling autonomous vehicles to deal with these varied conditions in a driving style that is recognizably human-like will be key to driving consumer confidence in the technology. The research also focused on advancing cyber security features in autonomous vehicles and investigating the implications of these cars on the wider transport system.
Other participants in the £13.5 million HumanDrive consortium include Hitachi, University of Leeds, Connected Places Catapult, HORIBA MIRA, SBD Automotive, Cranfield University, Atkins Ltd, Aimsun Ltd and Highways England.
