Osram Opto Semiconductors has introduced a multimode laser diode that combine a small form factor with beam quality for applications such as show lasers and stage lighting.

The PLPT9-450LA-E laser diodes offer some advantages over light emitting diodes (LEDs), achieving an optical power of 3.0 W and emits blue light with a wavelength of 447 nm. The diode comes in a TO90 package that contains two pins for contact and a simplified cooling system.

In an optical system, the laser light is focused at a point only a few micrometers in diameter. The lasers are directly used as a blue light source or in combination with a special phosphor for white conversion. The luminance of the white light source is around three times higher than that of LEDs, Osram said.

In addition to being used for stage lighting and show lasers, the diodes could be used for endoscopy, professional laser flashlights and other applications where this type of lighting is needed.
