Network Synchronization ICs Address the Challenges of 5G Wireless Equipment and Infrastructure

Microsemi Corp., a wholly owned subsidiary of Microchip Technology Inc., has introduced a new network synchronization IC family for Synchronous Ethernet (SyncE) and IEEE 1588 timing and line card applications.

The chip family is targeted at 5G wireless equipment and network infrastructure, providing advanced phase measurement and adjustment capabilities for next-generation transport and wireless equipment design. These capabilities enable equipment to achieve phase alignment requirements, which are down to 130 nanoseconds across the entire network, Microsemi said.

Research firm IHS Markit forecasts that 5G developments will increase substantially in the next few years, reaching $11.3 billion by 2022 up from $59 million in 2018.

Microsemi said the IC family will be applicable for a variety of 5G applications such as 5G baseband, radio units, distributed units and centralized units. The devices can also address the demands of mobile fronthaul, midhaul, and backhaul, including microwave and millimeter wave and service provider switches and routers, the company said.
