Two new apps launching at CES 2018 show off the creative possibilities of augmented reality. Developed by Silicon Valley-based AiFi, the Wonderlens and Holo Messenger can deliver a user’s creations in real time — and with the all-important accuracy that makes for a compelling AR experience.
The Wonderlens is designed to cut the background out of a user “selfie” in order to allow seamless transportation to an imagined, alternate world. Dozens of backgrounds — everything from swimming with whales to visiting alien landscapes — are available through the app.
The Holo Messenger is aimed squarely at your inner Star Wars geek, allowing users to deliver messages via hologram just like Princess Leia pleading for Obi-Wan Kenobi’s help in the original film.
But it isn’t all fun and games: AiFi says that the technology has numerous customer-facing use cases, including retail environments, smart city applications, hospital settings and sports. The company, whose name implies the concept of making AI as widely available as WiFi, is currently at work at creating what it calls the “world’s most advanced checkout-free shopping experience.” Stay tuned.
