Bourns, Inc. has unveiled a Gas Discharge Tube (GDT) series housed in a flat package circuit protection design that provides a reduction in volume and space. Created to meet the challenges inherent in high density, space-restricted applications, the Bourns Model 2017 Series FLAT GDT uses horizontal circuitry to address sensitive overvoltage protection requirements. Applications include telecommunications and industrial communications equipment, surge protective devices and PCB assemblies.
According to Bourns, the series provides a 75% savings in volume over standard 8 mm Bourns GDTs. Vertical mounting enables approximately 2x the GDTs in the same board space. The device can also maintain robust isolation and current-handling overvoltage protection as well as superior surge current ratings, low leakage and insertion loss, and constant capacitance, no matter the voltage.
The ITU K.12 Class III GDT device is rated at 10 kA on an 8/20 μs waveform and features DC breakdown voltages from 90 to 500 V. There are multiple mounting options, horizontal and vertical surface mount versions and a leadless design for cartridge or clamp fit apps. Available now, the Model 2017 is priced at $ 0.48 each in 1,000 piece quantities.
