After a difficult few years for its CMOS image sensor efforts, Toshiba has given recent indications that it is attempting to reclaim its leadership position among the competition. Recent announcements indicate an effort to re-boot its efforts in the image sensor market in 2015.
One announcement was related to Google's Project Ara, an attempt to create modular smartphones that allow the user to manually upgrade certain device systems, including cameras. In late February, Toshiba released a YouTube video demonstrating an Ara-ready 5 megapixel (MP) rear-facing replaceable camera module. Reportedly, the company is also working on a replaceable 13MP sensor module.
