The Lumia 1520 is the latest smartphone entry from Nokia, the company that had been the industry leader in feature phones. The phone runs on the Windows Phone 8 OS (Update 3), and has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 apps and baseband processor, comprising a Krait 400 CPU, Adreno 330 GPU, Hexagon QDSP6 signal processor, 4G LTE Advanced/Bluetooth/Wi-Fi/FM/USB connectivity module, as well as camera controller, sensor hub, display controller and GPS block.
According to Wayne Lam, Senior Analyst, Telecom Electronics at IHS Technology, the Nokia 1520 is “aimed at satisfying demand in emerging markets. The six-inch form factor is important, as a smartphone is the only entry point to computing devices in those markets.” He added that Nokia is making a big strategic bet, considering that Windows phones have 5% of a market dominated by Android devices (80%), with Apple iOS phones accounting for 15%. In playing catch-up, Lam says, Nokia is relying on component suppliers to innovate and provide reference designs.
