At the 2013 Consumer Electronics Show in January, Incisor.TV and IHS co-hosted a roundtable discussion with key industry players that delved into the trends, opportunities and difficulties facing the low-power wireless industry.
Participants included: Rob Morris, vice president, ANT Wireless, representing the ANT+ Alliance; Jim O’Callaghan, president and Tim Fowler, commercial director, Cambridge Consultants, EnOcean Alliance; Svein-Egil Nielsen, director of emerging technologies, Nordic Semiconductor; Matt Ramage, senior vice president, product management, VTech Communications; and Arend van der Weijden, senior director, short range wireless, Dialog Semiconductor, representing ULE Alliance. Moderators were Lisa Arrowsmith from IHS and Vince Holton from Incisor.TV.
Topics discussed included the ZigBee Alliance announcement regarding support for energy harvesting, which elicited a spirited response from EnOcean Alliance; whether the activities of one keystone company, or lack thereof, has derailed the adoption of near field communications (NFC); the emergence of machine-to-machine (M2M) communications and whether the cellular industry really has it covered; and the growing interest in the utilization of white space spectrum. The event concluded with an overview of the key developments of 2012 and what to expect in 2013.
