Wirepas mesh now connects 500,000 self-storage locks

Wirepas has deployed mesh networks to 500,000 smart locks across commercial and industrial self-storage sites to provide secure, real-time access control.

With minimal infrastructure, Wirepas’ mesh internet of things (IoT) operates inside the Nokē smart locks from Janus International Group Inc with no single point of failure and easy commissioning, the company said.

Additionally, as self-storage sites are often located inside buildings where poor cellular connectivity is found or Wi-Fi does not reach, the mesh technology allows for smart access control in real-world environments, Wirepas said.

"Reaching 500,000 deployed locks shows what Wirepas Mesh can do at scale,” said Teppo Hemiä, CEO of Wirepas. “It brings resilience, reliability and massive scalability to industrial and commercial IoT applications. With over 20 million devices deployed globally, it remains the only connectivity technology built from the ground up for demanding industrial needs.”

Wirepas’ IoT mesh is a decentralized wireless protocol where each device selects its own role and maintains its connections. There is no single point of failure on the network. Unlike Bluetooth mesh, Wirepas routes data based on the cost of each path and it runs on the same physical layers as Bluetooth Low Energy. Each message is encrypted and the devices without the right keys are unable to joint the network.
