A new family of 5-megapixel CMOS image sensors has been unveiled by ST Microelectronics that are designed to accelerate industrial vision across a range of applications.

The sensors, dubbed VD1943, VB1943, VD5943 and VB5943, are part of ST’s BrightSense portfolio and provide hybrid global and rolling shutter modes. ST said this allows engineers to optimize image capture for specific application requirements.

Other features of the sensors include motion-artifact free video capture, low noise and high-detail imaging.

This makes the sensors applicable for:

  • Machine and robotic vision
  • Biometric identification
  • Traffic management
  • Inventory management
  • Automated checkout

The sensors are built on ST’s 2.25-micron pixel technology and 3D stacking along with on-chip RGB-IR separation that eliminates the need for additional components and simplifying system design.

The on-chip RGB-IR separation supports multiple output patterns like 5MP RGB-NIR 4x4, 5MP RGB Bayer, 1.27MP NIR subsampling and 5mp NIR smart upscale. This reduces costs while maintaining full 5MP resolution for color and infrared imaging, ST said.

The integrated backside illumination and capacitive deep trench isolation (CDTI) pixel technologies enhance sensitivity and sharpness, particularly in lighting conditions. This allows for imaging in challenging or low light environments, especially where machine vision and edge AI applications may be used.
