The use of satellite communications (SATCOM) is gaining momentum in the smartphone sector as companies seek to use the technology to add value to its messaging platforms and give consumers the ability to communicate anywhere in the world at any time.
But more than half of international travelers have already experimented with a satellite phone or messaging device with off-grid travel being the primary reason for use.
According to a survey from Global Rescue, older travelers are likely to own a device while younger travelers are more likely to borrow a device while traveling.
In the survey, men were 44% more likely than women to have used a satellite device and the age group with the most usage was between 35 to 54.
“The use of satellite devices is growing among remote and adventure travelers,” said Dan Richards, CEO of The Global Rescue Companies and a member of the U.S. Travel and Tourism Advisory Board at the U.S. Department of Commerce. “But we’re also seeing a generational difference in how travelers access these tools — whether they buy, rent or borrow them.”
Why are people using satellite devices? Here are the reasons:
- 44% used it for off-grid travel
- 17% used it during an emergency
- 14% used it for real-time location tracking or check-ins
Among those under 35, they were more likely to use SATCOM technology for real-time check-ins. Older travelers were more likely to use it during emergencies or just to stay in touch with loved one.
When it comes to access:
- 49% of travelers own a satellite phone or device
- 19% borrow one
- 24% rent one
