Video: Philips Hue Play uses generative AI for real-time mood lighting

18 June 2025

Smart home vendor Signify has rolled out an adaptive, intelligent smart lighting system that interacts with other smart home devices for changing moods or scenes.

Called the Philips Hue Play, the “wall washer” — or a lighting unit that projects onto walls — uses a generative AI assistant to create personalized lighting using Signify’s ColorCast projection technology for a variety of gradients and lighting effects.

The wall washer reacts in real time with full-color and other lighting effects using Hue’s entertainment algorithm for realism and spatial immersion. Users can change the projection area by positioning the Hue Play closer or further from the wall. The lighting interacts with:

  • Games
  • Movies
  • Music

When it is not interacting with these systems, the Hue Play provides ambient light.

The lighting unit works with Signify’s Hue HDMI Sync box, TV and PC Sync apps as well as the traditional voice assistants like Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant and Apple HomeKit.

Generative AI in smart lighting

AI is being integrated into just about everything, but smart lighting? Signify said the AI assistant is live in three countries — Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg.

The AI assistant allows consumers to speak or type their mood, style or occasion to the lighting unit and the AI assistant recommends scenes or generates a scene particularly for whatever the user gave it.

“This marks a new era in smart lighting,” said John Smith, business leader for Philips Hue at Signify. “Our AI assistant is just the beginning of a smarter, more intuitive home experience.”

Signify plans to roll out the generative AI to other countries later this year.

The Signify Hue Play comes in a variety of colors priced at $219.99 for a single unit, $384.99 for a two-pack.
