Modular hexagon-wheel robots turn cramped warehouse areas into intelligent sorting hubs

06 May 2025

German logistics firm Cellumation has developed its Celluveyor system, which promises to reshape how goods are sorted and moved in manufacturing settings.

According to its developers, the Celluveyor system features a modular design constructed from small, hexagonal cells outfitted with omnidirectional wheels that allow packages to move precisely in any direction. The researchers suggest that the system is ideal for complex routing and sorting in tight warehouse environments, offering a flexible alternative to conventional conveyor belts.

The company also noted that A 3D camera-based vision system tracks every object’s height, size and position above the surface, with the data feeding into algorithms that determine the best routes for those objects in real time. Consequently, there is no need for downstream changes because the objects at exit locations are precisely aligned and oriented.

Making this possible is Cellumation’s adaptive software, which can instantaneously track, alter and correct movement.

The team noted that using scanned data or preset logistical rules, the Celluveyor’s software-driven control system selects the ideal route for each package. The system reportedly processes up to roughly 450 layers or 5,200 packages per hour.
