Embedded World 2025: MRAM comes to LEO satellites

13 March 2025

Memory startup Everspin Technologies Inc. has expanded the use of its magnetoresistive random access memory (MRAM) persistent memory to the automotive and aerospace arena, specifically focusing on low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites.

At Embedded World 2025, Everspin announced two members of the Persyst EMxxLX series that can operate at temperatures from -40° C to 125° C. This allows these memory devices to be used as high-speed memory for defense and military applications as well as those applications in extreme environments.

According to Everspin, LEO satellite deployments need memory solutions capable of withstanding the harsh environment of space, including tolerance for radiation. As these LEO satellites are playing an increased role in communications, connectivity and infrastructure — and likely will become even more important in the coming years — memory solutions will require not just high speeds but extended endurance and resilience in these environments.

For next-generation embedded systems, these MRAM devices also feature:

  • Capacities of 64 Mb and 128 Mb
  • Quad SPI interface
  • Faster write speeds versus NOR flash
  • Simpler architecture

Embedded World 2025 takes place this week in Nuremberg, Germany.
