Semtech Introduces first LoRa Plus chip

11 March 2025

Semtech Corp. has launched its first chip in the long range (LoRa) Plus family, a fourth-generation device that supports both terrestrial and SATCOM networks in the sub-GHz, 2.4 GHz ISM bands and licensed S band.

Called LR2021, the transceiver is backward compatible with previous LoRa devices for compatibility with LoRa wide area networks (LoRaWAN). It also features expanded physical layer modulations for fast long-range communication (FLRC) and is compatible with low-power wireless protocols such as:

  • Amazon Sidewalk
  • Meshtastic
  • W-MBUS
  • Wi-SUN FSK
  • Z-Wave

The chip supports sensor data transmission for applications like gunshot detection, glass break sensing, license plate recognition and fall detection. The chip features data rates up to 2.6 Mbps for audio streaming and image transfer while supporting multi-region deployment via a single-SKU design.

Other features of the chip include:

  • Multi-region operation
  • +22 dBm to -10 dBm transmitter
  • Multi-spreading factors (SF) receiver
  • Increased frequency offset tolerance removing TCXO and large thermal relief
