Autonomous shuttle startup Nuro is expanding its Level 4 driverless vehicle testing to three cities in two states in what the company claims is one of the largest L4 deployments in the U.S.
The expansion of Nuro’s Level 4 driverless capabilities using zero-occupant vehicles will include both the transporting of goods and people. Nuro said it is one of only a handful of autonomous vehicle companies deploying its technology in a driverless capacity at the scale of an entire city.

The expanded deployments include:
- Mountain View, California
- Palo Alto, California
- Texas
In California, Nuro said it is increasing its area of deployment by 83% and in Houston it is increasing its autonomous shuttle deployments by 70%.
New technology
Additionally, Nuro will begin testing its expanded operational design domain (ODD) that include:
- Multi-lane road operation at 35 mph
- Complex scenario handling
- Night operation
In the complex scenario testing, this will include reacting to active emergency vehicles, navigating construction zones and dealing with active school buses.
Nuro said the new technologies will allow it to expand to everyday driving conditions and expand its testing to real-world situations.
