AI smartphones get a memory boost

23 October 2024

Micron has validated its low-power double data rate 5X (LPDDR5X) memory and universal flash storage for use on Qualcomm Technologies’ Snapdragon 8 Elite mobile platform.

The move allows the memory to be used in next-generation artificial intelligence (AI) smartphones.

The LPDDR5X memory fuels AI applications that require high energy to prolong battery life between chargers with a combination of high bandwidth, low latency and power efficiency.

According to Counterpoint Research, more than 1 billion AI smartphones are projected to ship globally by 2027 — as demand grows substantially with AI being integrated into the mobile ecosystem and end users.

Features of the memory include:

  • Speeds up to 9.6 gigabits per second
  • Built on 1-beta process technology
  • Micron’s improved battery life
  • 4% improved power savings
  • Advanced pattern multiplication lithography

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite mobile platform is a system-on-chip for AI smartphones and its mobile chipset reference design helps enable and integrate AI into these devices.
