Avnet Inc. will launch a new system-on-module (SOM) at the upcoming Embedded World 2024 trade show in what the company claims is the first AMD Versal AI Edge device in its range of SOMs.

Called the VE2302, the SOM is designed to be a production-ready 50 mm by 50 mm form factor with three Samtec AcceleRate HD connectors for mounting to a carrier card.

Avent is also launching a development kit specifically designed to support the VE2302 SOM to evaluate the capabilities of the module with a combination of peripherals.

“Developers can use the VE2302 SOM as a prototyping and development platform, or as a production-ready module to reduce hardware development time and speed time to market,” said Jim Beneke, vice president of the Advanced Applications Group at Avnet.

The SOM is targeted at applications for optical object recognition, lidar and radar detection, robotics, artificial intelligence and machine learning, industrial control and automation, embedded compute and more.

Other features of the SOM include:

  • Dual Arm Cortex-A72 cores
  • Dual Arm Cortex-R5F cores
  • L1 and L2 cache with ECC
  • 256KB on-chip memory
  • 8 GTYP transceivers
  • 32 AI engine-ML tiles
  • 4GB LPDDR4 SDRAM
  • 32GB eMMC
  • 512Mb OSPI flash

Additionally, Avnet developed an I/O carrier card for the SOM to support interfaces for six MIPI 22-pin headers, HDMI-TX, HDMI-RX, HSIO TXR2 PL expansion, USB 2.0 port, Gigabit Ethernet, PMOD and a MicroSD card slot. The carrier also includes a USB-C port for JTAG/USB UART, two CAN terminals, SYSMON Interface and multiple user LEDs, push buttons and slide switch.

Embedded World takes place in Nuremberg, Germany, April 9 through April 11.
