Giving makers a chance to Matter

Silicon Labs is collaborating with Arduino to create Matter over Thread applications that are open source, lowering the barriers to entry to make developing Matter devices easier.

Under the partnership, Arduino’s Matter software libraries will be available on both the xG24 Explorer Kit from Silicon Labs and the MGM2409 development board, a xG24-based SparkFun Thing Plus Matter

The Matter standard was first introduced in early 2022 by the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA) as a way to unify smart home devices under a universal protocol. The idea was to take all smart home devices —regardless of manufacturer — and allow control via one hub or smartphone app. That means devices from Google, Apple, Samsung, Amazon, Comcast or any other company will work together for the first time.

Code samples, reference designs, documentation and more are now live in the Arduino Core for Silicon Labs Devices GitHub page.

According to the companies, the collaboration offers a step toward democratizing Matter to allow anyone from students to enterprise developers able to create new devices that will work in the smart home.

Silicon Labs said using a wide range of pre-compiled libraries allows developers to get new devices up and running. The company was able to set up a new board flashed as a Matter device and commissioned into a new network in under two minutes.

Looking ahead

While the introduction of the reference designs, documentation and code samples are the first part of the collaboration. Phase two of the partnership will include a co-developed new Arduino Nano development board for small form factor devices.

The development board will incorporate the MGM 240 module from Silicon Labs.

The module will feature:

  • Wireless connectivity using Matter, Thread and Bluetooth protocols
  • An Arm Cortex-M22
  • 10 dBm output power
  • Low current consumption
  • PSA Certification Level 3 security
  • 1536 kB of flash
  • 256 kB of RAM
  • 32 GPIO
