Walmart announced plans to build a proprietary electric vehicle (EV) fast-charging network at thousands of Walmart and Sam’s Club locations across the U.S. by 2030.
The EV chargers would be in addition to the 1,300 EV fast-charging stations that Walmart currently has its more than 280 U.S. facilities.
Walmart said that with a store or club located within 10 miles of about 90% of Americans, having EV chargers across the country will help to expand EV ownership in rural, suburban and urban areas.
While many EV charging stations are needed in areas such as highways and other streets in the U.S., many experts believe that most of the EV charging will be done at homes and when drivers visit everyday locations such as grocery stores, office centers, restaurants and more.
The move to install a coast-to-coast charging network in the U.S. is part of Walmart’s goal to achieve zero emissions by 2040 and includes supply chain vehicle and fuel class upgrades for deliveries via electric vehicles.
