Texas Instruments (TI) has introduced what it claims is the industry’s first stand-alone active electromagnetic interference (EMI) filter ICs for high-density power supplies.
The launch was made at the Applied Power Electronics Conference (APEC) 2023 trade show taking place this week in Orlando, Florida.
The EMI ICs are used to reduce system costs while simultaneously meeting EMI regulatory standards. The portfolio of ICs can sense and cancel common-mode EMI by as much as 30 dB at frequencies between 100 kHz and 3 MHz in single- and three-phase AC power systems.
TI said this allows designers to reduce the size of chokes by 50% compared to purely passive filter solutions.
Additionally, these devices reduce the heat generated in a power-supply EMI filter, extending filter capacitor lifetimes and increasing system reliability, TI said.
This will help with challenges such as designing high-density switching regulators and implementing a compact and efficient design of the EMI input filter. These filter ICs enable engineers to shrink the inductance value of common-mode chokes by as much as 80%.
Also at APEC 2023, TI will showcase its system-level gallium nitride (GaN) and silicon carbide (SiC) solutions for power density and efficiency.
