Video: Wing begins drone delivery of KFC

08 February 2022

Wing, the autonomous drone delivery arm of Alphabet, is teaming up with fast food chain Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) to deliver menu items to customers in Logan, Australia.

According to Wing, the customers of Wing wanted drone delivery from KFC as it was the most requested item.

The drone pilot project will deliver the fast food directly to homes and workplaces in the Logan, Queensland, area including the suburbs of Kingston, Logan Central, Slacks Creek, Underwood and Woodridge. Initially the pilot will be available to these select areas, but will gradually expand to include other locations in the future.

Wing said it takes about the same time to make the chicken and other food items from KFC as it does to get it delivered by drone.

In the video, a Wing drone is seen descending to pick up an order in its tethered case. It then ascends to deliver to customers in the area.

The move continues Wing’s expansion of drone services in Australia where it has made the bulk of its deliveries so far. The company said in 2021 it was a banner year, recording more than 140,000 deliveries. This was a 600% increase over 2020 with growth of services accelerating throughout the year.

In the Logan area, Wing has delivered anything from hot coffee and snack packs to medical items and other cargo.

Also in 2021, Wing began preparations for what it calls the first metro drone service in Dallas, Texas, with operations located and integrated with local retailers such as Walgreens.
