Video: Wing celebrates drone delivery progress in 2021

16 December 2021

Wing, the unmanned aerial system unit of Alphabet, is calling 2021 the year that drone delivery took off with the company recording more than 140,000 deliveries.

This represents a 600% increase over last year with growth of its drone delivery services accelerating throughout the year. Wing also said interest in new services from drones is also gaining in demand.

This year Wing has:

  • Built what it claims is the first rooftop drone delivery nest in partnership with a leading retail property group in Logan, Australia.
  • In the U.S., Wing is prepared to launch the first metro drone service in Dallas, Texas, with operations co-located and integrated with local retail locations including Walgreens. The company also released its free drone-flyer app, called OpenSky, to make it easier for drone flyers to require permission to fly in controlled airspace.
  • In August, Wing announced it had completed more than 100,000 drone deliveries in two years, the majority of which took place in Logan, Australia. Since that time, drone flights have accelerated to reach 140,000 flights this year.

Wing has been transporting several items for delivery throughout the year including hot coffee, roasted chickens, snack packs, medical items and much more.
