Pickering says new power relay modules double channel count of nearest competitor

13 October 2021

Pickering Interfaces, the U.K.-based supplier of modular signal switching and simulation solutions for use in electronic test and verification, has recently announced the addition of two new 5 Amp power relay module families to its product line. According to the company, these are the highest-density 5 Amp switching modules in the PXI market, providing double the channel count of the nearest competitor.

The modules are designed for switching heavy AC or DC loads or for controlling large external relays, contactors and solenoids. Available in both PXI and PXIe formats, the two models are available in multiple configurations: up to 50 single pole single throw (SPST) relays for the 40/42-153 model, or up to 32 single pole double throw (SPDT) relays for the 40/42-158.

Control software provides a notification if a user attempts to operate relays when the interlock is activated. The feature can be used to prevent relay operation until specific hardware conditions occur or as a functional stop for relay de-energization.

“The new 40/42-153 & 40/42-158 PXI/PXIe power relay module families have been designed to maximize switch payload while minimizing the physical footprint and maintaining performance,” said Steve Edwards, Pickering’s switching product manager. Edwards added that applications include automotive, aerospace and defense automatic test equipment (ATE) systems as well as general-purpose switching applications.

Additional specs include:

40/42-153 PXI/PXIe

  • Up to 50 x SPST power relays per module
  • Available in 18, 25, 36 or 50 SPST configurations
  • Optional hardware interlock
  • Hot switch up to 250 V AC, 5 A
  • Cold switch up to 400 V DC/250 V AC peak
  • Maximum power handling 150 W/1250 VA

40/42-158 PXI/PXIe

  • Up to 32 x SPDT power relays per module
  • Available in 8, 16, 24 or 32 SPDT configurations
  • Optional hardware interlock
  • Hot switch up to 250 V AC, 5 A
  • Cold switch up to 400 V DC/250 V AC peak
  • Maximum power handling 175 W/1250 VA

Users transitioning to a PXIe control interface may want to consider partially populated options, which duplicate the front panel connector interface and pin-out of existing Pickering 5 A products.

Both new modules include a spare relay to enable quick on-site repair and minimize system downtime, and a three-year warranty.
