New lidar platforms coming from Intel and Semtech

20 May 2021

To accelerate the adoption of lidar, Semtech Corp. is working with Intel Corp. to develop optical semiconductor platforms.

Under the collaboration, Semtech’s laser drivers and programmable transimpedance amplifiers (TIAs) will be integrated into Intel’s RealSense lidar camera L515.

The collaboration is designed to work in low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) environments. Semtech’s TIAs include low input referred noise (IRN), which in turn allows the L515 to be power efficient with a resolution of up to 23 million depth points per second.

Semtech has been working with Intel for the previous two generations of lidar chips in production and these new lidar devices will deliver depth and less than 16 mm error at maximum operating ranges along with a high frequency laser modulation to sense objects as small as 7 mm diameter 1 m away.
