Amazon is dabbling with what augmented reality (AR) can do to enhance traditional brick and mortar stores by opening its first hair salon in London, England, which will allow customers to preview new looks before having the work done.

Called Amazon Salon, the facility will contain Amazon Fire tablets at each styling station and capture a new look in AR before styling the person. The salon will also test new point-and-learn technology, where customers can point at the product they are interested in on a display shelf and receive information including brand videos and educational content on a display screen.

“We have designed this salon for customers to come and experience some of the best technology, hair care products and stylists in the industry,” said John Boumphrey, U.K. country manager at Amazon. “We want this unique venue to bring us one step closer to customers, and it will be a place where we can collaborate with the industry and test new technologies.”

The Amazon Salon will be open first to Amazon employees before taking bookings in the coming weeks. The salon will be the only facility of its kind with no current plans to open any other salon locations, Amazon said.

Amazon said the interactive salon is designed to support the beauty industry and follows the launch of the Amazon Professional Beauty Store, which allows customers to select from 10,000 salon and spa products and supplies.

The hair and styling services at Amazon Salon will be provided by Elena Lavagni and her team, which has been based in London for 20 years. Lavagni has provided hair services for Paris Fashion Week and the Cannes Film Festival. The Amazon Salon will offer a range of services for adults and children.
