Unistellar has launched a crowdfunding campaign for its eVscope digital telescope to expand the reach of the device to consumers looking to experience space in new ways.
Launched last year, the eVscope has distributed 4,000 telescopes to consumers across Europe, the U.S. and Japan. Some of this growth is attributed to an active citizen science partnership with the SETI Institute that saw exponential growth in its size and scientific contributions during the past year.
Unistellar seeks to raise between $3 million and $5 million during the crowdfunding campaign that will take place through the month of February on Fundable. The crowdfunding will help to scale its business as well as to develop a new line of digital telescopes to address new and larger consumer segments. Funds will help to finance R&D, sales and marketing needed to launch two new digital telescopes in 2022.
“What Unistellar is doing with astronomy can be compared to what happened with aerial photography and aero-modeling, following the development of semi-pro and consumer drones,” said Laurent Marfisi, CEO of Unistellar. “Making this adventure accessible through crowdfunding equity is consistent with Unistellar’s DNA, from our first reward-based crowdfunded product, to global groundbreaking crowdsourced science, and ultimately to making astronomy a true social and networked experience.”
