5G goes live in Portugal

Portugal telecom Dense Air has installed 5G infrastructure on the Estoril Congress Center in Cascais, a coastal town west of Lisbon.

The 5G installation will allow visitors to the city as well as residents to use the next generation 5G telecommunications technology. With the installation, Cascais becomes one of the first municipalities in Portugal to implement 5G technology.

Source: Dense AirThe installation follows a memorandum of understanding in 2019 between Cascais City Council and Dense Air to further its smart city concept. Dense Air worked to identify areas where 5G can make an impact on its citizens and Estoril Congress Centre allows Cascais to use the fast download speeds, higher bandwidth and lower latency that 5G affords.

"This is another very significant milestone for Dense Air Portugal bringing Neutral Host 5G services to market,” said Tony Boyle, Portugal general manager at Dense Air. “This 5G MMIMO site delivers Gigabit services to 5G enabled handsets and also acts as a donor to our innovative 'Magic Box Small Cells' able to deliver densified in-building coverage.”

The installation of the 5G site and other small cells provides a location to test and validate Dense Air’s Neutral Host plan — the deployment of a small cell centric network throughout Portugal to improve network coverage, increase capacity and enhance mobile experiences.

Dense Air plans to use the network to test and support use cases such as immersive education, self-driving cars and industrial internet of things (IIoT).

Cascais recognizes the many possibilities enabled by 5G technology and will utilize this future network architecture to test and support innovations such as immersive education, autonomous driving and industrial IoT; all of which are now possible due to this installation. During the next 90 days it will be used to test and prove the service.
