Intel Corp. has revealed more details about the Thunderbolt 4, the universal cable connectivity solution, that allows up to four Thunderbolt ports and universal cables up to 2 meters in length.

Intel’s upcoming mobile PC processors will be the first microprocessors to integrate the Thunderbolt 4 and Intel has announced a Thunderbolt 4 controller 8000 series that is compatible with millions of Thunderbolt 3 PCs and accessories available.

Thunderbolt promises to deliver consistent capabilities for connecting computers to data, video and power with just one USB Type-C port. This includes connecting to docks, displays, external storage or any USB accessory.

Thunderbolt 4 builds on the released Thunderbolt 3 universal cable connectivity but delivers 40 Gbps speeds and data, video and power over a single connection. The Thunderbolt 4 is fully compatible with prior generations of Thunderbolt and USB products. The Thunderbolt 4 certification includes:

  • Double the video and data requirements of Thunderbolt 3.
  • Support for two 4K displays or one 8K display.
  • PCIe at 32 Gbps for storage speeds up to 3,000 Mbps.
  • Support for docks up to four Thunderbolt 4 ports.
  • PC charging on at least one computer port.
