Watch: Smart diaper detects UTIs

26 June 2019

The early identification and treatment of urinary tract infections (UTIs) can be problematic in infants and A disposable diaper sensor can continuously track the presence of urinary tract infection, leading to earlier treatment. Purdue University researchers have engineered a wearable solution for early detection of UTIs in the form of a diaper-embedded, wireless, self-powered and autonomous monitoring sensor module.

The disposable bandage-sized device includes a paper-based colorimetric nitrite sensor, urine-activated batteries, a boost DC-DC converter, a low-power sensor interface based on pulse-width modulation and a Bluetooth Low Energy module for wireless transmission. Data is sent to a smartphone, and accurate measurements of nitrites, which are indicative of UTIs, are provided within about two minutes.

Testing demonstrated a detection limit of 4 mg/l for nitrite for the sensor module.
