Source: Omron CorporationSource: Omron CorporationIndustrial automation solutions provider Omron Automation Americas has just announced the release of more than 2,500 new models to its E2E NEXT line of proximity sensors. The devices offer enhanced sensing distance to minimize target contact during production, as well as IoT capability for improved predictive maintenance.

According to a press release from Omron, 70% of unexpected equipment downtime is caused by component failures; a large proportion of these components are proximity sensors. The long sensing distance of the new sensors offers increased stability, helping manufacturers reduce potential causes of unplanned downtime. The sensing distance also offers flexibility, making it possible to solve size-limited applications with smaller form factor sensors.

The sensors are resistant to cutting oil, which according to Omron accounts for approximately 30% of unexpected component failures. The additional IO-Link functionality also enables the sensors to indicate the location and cause of failures, and to send notifications when warning signs of impending failures are detected.

Omron stated that the combination of IoT capabilities, long sensing distance and oil-resistant sheathing reduces the risk of sudden equipment shutdowns by a factor of three.
