Ironwood Electronics recently introduced a new BGA socket addressing high performance requirements: CBT-BGA-6087. The contactor is a stamped spring pin with 19 gram actuation force per ball and cycle life of 125,000 insertions. The self inductance of the contactor is 0.93 nH, insertion loss is less than 1 dB at 14.1 GHz and contact resistance is less than 30 megaohms.
The current capacity of each contactor is 4 amps at 60° C and socket temperature range is -55° C to 180° C. The socket also features a floating guide for precise ball to pin alignment. The specific configuration of the package to be tested in the CBT-BGA-6087 is a BGA, 31 mm x 31 mm, 1 mm pitch, 676 position, 30 x 30 ball array. The socket is mounted using supplied hardware on the target PCB with no soldering, and uses the smallest footprint for nearby passive components. The socket uses a stiffener plate to support the back side of the PCB and allows passive components to be placed via customized pockets. This socket utilizes a clamshell lid with integrated compression mechanism and is constructed with a cam actuated lever lid with central heatsink and fan for 11 W power dissipation. A type K thermocouple is placed in the middle of the heatsink to measure case temperature of BGA.
To use, the device is placed inside the socket and the clamshell lid is closed by latching and applying downward pressure by turning the lever. This socket can be used for hand test and temperature characterization as well as debugging the application in the development platform.
