AT&T recently claimed it had achieved 1 gigabit per second (GB/sec) on its 5G network. While it is unlikely that most people will be getting this type of speed during the initial rollout, the fact that the company could achieve it is proof of what might be possible long term.
Now, the telecom has said it has surpassed 2 GB/sec wireless speeds on its live 5G commercial network in Atlanta using the Netgear Nighthawk 5G mobile hotspot.
AT&T said it is the first carrier in the U.S. to reach this speed.
While 5G has only been deployed to a few certain cities and only in a few regions inside those cities, speeds that have been tested on live networks have not really garnered 1 GB speeds if they are even able to get a connection given the limited availability of the signal.
Many believe it will take upgrades to the 5G equipment to boost the signal in the cities where the wireless connection has been deployed and increase the speed at which people can download.
At speeds of 2 GB/sec, AT&T said users could download a two-hour HD movie in 10 seconds.
