Source: Newark Element14Newark Element14, a division of Avnet, has announced the winners of its “Bluetooth Unleashed” design challenge, one of five challenges the Element14 community runs each year to show off developments in Bluetooth technology.

The winners included a smart doorbell, an enhanced exercise bike and a device to improve the ambiance in a room.

Shabaz Yousaf developed a smart doorbell that features a Texas Instruments CC2640R2 LaunchPad board, custom PCBs and Bluetooth Low Energy. Yousaf won the Grand Prize in the competition with the doorbell having the power to open and close gates, act as an emergency attendant button or control or monitor other types of things. The doorbell could be connected to a Raspberry Pi or BeagleBone to extend capabilities such as activating cameras, recording timestamps and more.

The runner up in the competition was Yuri Tikhonov with a smart exercise bike computer and third prize was awarded to Sakthivigneshwar R for a mood sensing room ambiance system with facial recognition. The device detects if someone is upset and disperses aroma therapy, plays soothing images and changes lighting.
