Tomorrow, SEMICON West, the most notable semiconductor trade show and conference in the industry, will start. The event runs through July 12 and is being held at the Moscone Center, San Francisco. It is sponsored by the SEMI organization, a conglomerate that promotes the development of the global electronics supply chain and chip development.
Thousands of technical people from all over the world will attend this year’s conference and trade show. The theme for 2018 is “Beyond Smart,” to showcase new technologies related to all things smart. Three main topics will be promoted.
Big data and artificial intelligence (AI) are driving the development of new electronic paradigms that are being integrated into smart manufacturing processes. The unlimited growth of data is forcing the creation of new technologies to collect, store and analyze data. This, in turn, is boosting the enhancement of sensors, memory, 5G, processors, silicon photonics and other electronics components.
Probably the fastest growing electronic segments nowadays is the manufacturing of semiconductor chips for the automotive industry. The explosive growth of flash memory is mainly due to this market. Sensing technology for autonomous vehicles, data storage and high-definition lidar systems will be showcased during the trade show.
Without a smart workforce, the industry won’t be able to develop future technologies.
"Attracting new candidates and developing our workforce are key to sustaining our growth and innovation," says SEMI president, Ajit Manocha. “Talent is a pinch point. In Silicon Valley alone, SEMI members have thousands of open positions, globally more than 10,000.”
This is a critical issue for SEMI and the industry. SEMICON West 2018 will have a whole pavilion dedicated to this topic. The idea is to develop methods to better attract, retain and ensure that the emerging workforce succeeds. According to SEMI, in three years millennials will represent the majority of the industrial workforce. The SEMICON West pavilion this year will try to address these challenges.
Three more trade shows also take place during the SEMICON West conference:
- Intersolar North America: bringing together the foremost industries in the areas of photovoltaics, smart renewable energy and solar heating and cooling technologies.
- The Wearables Technology Conference: a major conference and exhibit show highlighting the present and future of the wearable market.
- Blockchain: Technology and Applications: a special session organized by SEMI and IEEE to highlight the technologies associated with the most disruptive technology of the 21st century. According to the World Economy Forum (WEF), blockchain will account for 10 percent of the world GDP by 2025. It is expected that it will be a prime base for IoT, energy, supply chain, smart manufacturing and smart healthcare.
Electronics360 is present at SEMICON West 2018 and will report important events taking place at the conference.
