Signify, formerly Philips Lighting, has signed an agreement with horticulture maker Argo-Inwest to expand its light emitting diode (LED) installation from 25 hectares to 68.5 hectares, or about 100 soccer fields.
The agreement expands the deal already in place with Argo-Inwest that introduced the largest LED horticulture lighting project in the world in 2017. The lighting was able to improve crop yields using Philips GreenPower LED top-lighting and Philips GreenPower LED inter-lighting system for tomato plants.
According to Signify, demand for locally grown vegetables and fruits is increasing and in response, production involving LED lighting is increasing. LED lighting use at Agro-Inwest has reduced energy use by nearly 50 percent and improved growth predictability, crop appearance and yield.
