STMicroelectronics has introduced two new USB Type-C port-controller ICs with built-in protection designed to help implement the new USB interface into applications.
USB Type-C features a reversible plug orientation and cable direction and consolidates support for all USB features and an alternative model that allows for guest protocols such as HDMI or DisplayPort in the same cable. The plug is designed to simplify the connection for the next-generation of electronics to set up each connection correctly every time.
The new controller ICs feature downstream-facing ports (DFP) and one that can handle either downstream-facing, upstream-facing or dual-role use. Both the new ICs support the Type-C cable-attachment and connector orientation detection and operate over 3V to 22V with no external voltage regulator.
The STUSB4710 DFP controller is targeted at applications such as AC adapters and power suppliers, power hubs, docking stations, smart plugs and displays. While the STUSB1602 manages USB Type-C ports in power sources or devices.
The STUSB1602 is priced at $0.75 and the STUSB4710 is priced at $0.80 in 1,000 unit quantities. ST is also offering evaluation boards for both devices, including the P-NUCLEO-USB002 that features an STM32F0 microcontroller and a type-C cable for $48.90.
