Single Wavelength Solution Enables 100 Gb/s, 400 Gb/s Connectivity

20 September 2016

Applied Micro Circuits Corporation, BrPhotonics and MACOM Technology Solutions Inc. have successfully demonstrated 100 Gb/s PAM4 single wavelength (lambda) technology over single-mode fiber. This solution features AppliedMicro’s 16nm FinFET 100 Gb/s PAM4 DSP, BrPhotonics’ newest ultra-high bandwidth TFPS modulator, and MACOM’s industry- leading high-bandwidth, low-noise transimpedance amplifier. The successful demonstration illustrates that the complete eco-system for 100 Gb/s over a single wavelength technology is ready today, with deployments expected in 2017.

The companies expect the single-wavelength 100Gb/s technology to transform the market for 100 Gb/s and 400 Gb/s intra-datacenter interconnects by enabling deployments of 100 Gb/s QSFP, 400 Gb/s double-density QSFP and 800 Gb/s CFP8 modules. For 100 Gb/s, this technology reduces the number of lasers to one and eliminates the need for optical multiplexing. For 400 Gb/s implementations, only four lasers are needed, representing a major opportunity for data center operators to reduce capital expenditures and operating expenses with an extremely compact module form factor.

AppliedMicro, BrPhotonics and MACOM are showcasing live demonstrations of the technology in AppliedMicro’s Booth MR6, at ECOC 2016, taking place at the CCD Congress (Stockumer Kirchstraße 61, 40474 Düsseldorf, Germany) from Sept. 19–21, 2016.
