Cisco Acquires Chipmaker Leaba Semiconductor

11 March 2016

In a rare hardware-related acquisition, Cisco Systems has made clear its intent to buy Israeli-based fabless semiconductor firm Leaba Semiconductor in order to boost its position in the data center. Under the $320 million all-cash deal, Cisco will use Leaba’s networking semiconductors in order to provide new data center solutions. According to Cisco, they're aiming to address the infrastructure challenges happening in the market. The company says it will combine the semiconductor making experience of Leaba with its own engineering teams in order to accelerate its plans for next-generation products, and bring new capabilities to the market.

The Leaba team will report to Cisco’s Core Hardware Group, led by senior VP Ravi Cherukuri.
