Varian Medical Systems has introduced a small and light portable industrial linear accelerator high-energy X-ray generator for industrial applications. The device is sufficiently powerful to penetrate steel and concrete. The Linatron Xp is designed for integration into imaging systems for pipeline testing, perimeter security, vehicle inspection and many other infrastructure inspection and first responder applications.
The Linatron Xp is available in both liquid-cooled and air-cooled versions depending on the environment and application. The liquid-cooled version is used for 'high duty' applications, where the X-ray beam is used for long periods, continually running, while the air-cooled version is used in short bursts, with thermal recovery periods in between.
It weighs less than 250 pounds and fits into two cases that can each be moved by two people. It is easily integrated with Varian's PaxScan 2530HE flat-panel digital image detector, or it can be built into systems using computed radiography or film for fast, real-time digital imaging.
According to the company, no other compact solution that operates at high energy—between 0.95 and 1.35 megavolts, directly between the energy of an X-ray tube and a full-sized industrial linear accelerator. The device uses no cobalt sources, eliminating the presence of radioactive waste to dispose of or to protect.
