Wolfson Microelectronics plc has announced that it will provide its technology for audio to mobile phone chipset provider MediaTek Inc. for use in its LTE reference platforms.
As a first step in the collaboration, Wolfson’s WM8281 Audio Hub IC is available alongside MediaTek’s latest mobile LTE SoC platforms.
This will enable smartphones and tablets to have 24-bit 192 kHz high resolution audio playback and ambient noise cancellation for playback and voice calls. The expectation is that this will turn from a chip and software product sell for Wolfson (Edinburgh, Scotland) into an IP core licensing deal with MediaTek.
"The Wolfson WM8281 solution pre-integrated into our high-end LTE reference designs, such as MT6595, will provide our customers with unparalleled audio and voice differentiation,” said Jeffrey Ju, general manager of the MediaTek smartphone business unit.
The MT6595 is MediaTek;s second-generation octa-core LTE SOC that features four Cortex-A17 and four Cortex-A7 cores, PowerVR Rogue Series 6, H.265 UHD video, 802.11ac, and LTE. The MT6595 followed on from the MT6592.
