ABB Robotics introduces a new automated surface finishing cell

05 June 2026

A sanding and polishing cell designed to automate surface finishing tasks — such as sanding and polishing — has been developed by ABB Robotics.

The OmniVance Collaborative Surface Finishing Cell uses a GoFa collaborative robot to perform high-quality, precision surface finishing — all without the need for robotics expertise, the company explained.

Further, the cell is entirely self-contained, and as it automates repetitive sanding and polishing tasks, the cell increases throughput and reduces the amount of scrap and rework, thereby saving time, effort and expense.

According to its developers, because the cell features integrated dust extraction readiness, a clean, healthy work environment is maintained. Importantly, the fully automated design reduces physical strain and frees up skilled workers to concentrate on more valuable tasks.

Other features of the system include lead-through 3D path recording, 2D preset path creation and intuitive path editing, integrated into Wizard Easy Programming blocks, which can cut programming time by up to roughly 90%.
