NORD drive electronics: The smart choice for dynamic control

12 December 2025

Since the 1980s, drive electronics have been an integral part of the modular products offered by global solution provider NORD Drivesystems. The inclusion of electronic control products, along with their established gear units and electric motors, meant that NORD could offer complete drive systems from one single source, providing their customers with increased reliability, efficiency, performance, reduced maintenance and cost savings. Today, NORD’s drive electronics portfolio has grown into a wide range of offerings with versatile adaptability to match nearly any application.

During the drive system selection, configuration and design process, NORD takes more into account than just motion. They also focus on energy consumption, increased operational reliability, reduced total cost of ownership and application-specific optimization. NORD’s modular drive solutions can be precisely configured to individual applications and customer requirements with over 20,000,000 standard configurations are possible. This range of services and functions reflects the diverse needs of the more than 100 industries the company serves.

NORDAC variable frequency drives and motor starters are characterized by high compatibility with NORD’s entire gear motor portfolio, scalable functionality, ease of installation and high precision regulation. An integrated PLC enables customers to design modular and autonomous production systems while NORDCON tools simplify the entire installation process and allow for quick adjustment and optimized operation. Both centralized solutions for control cabinet installation and decentralized versions for use on the application are available for connection with asynchronous or synchronous motors.

NORDAC PRO variable frequency drives are a centralized, control cabinet solution with scalable functionality through six frame sizes, an integrated multi-protocol Ethernet interface and a multi-encoder interface for multi-axis control. Notable features across the entire product series include sensor-less current vector control that ensures constant speeds, even with fluctuating loads and extremely high torques during startup, 200% overload reserve for increased safety in lifting gear applications, plus an integrated brake chopper for four-quadrant operation. With their compact and “book size” format, they are perfect for space-saving installation in control cabinets.

NORDAC LINK variable frequency drives and motor starters are ideal for installation close to the motor and offer flexible configuration for adaptation to a large variety of applications with full plug-and-play capability for easy installation. Thanks to their integrated maintenance switch and local manual control options, commissioning and servicing is quick and simple. NORDAC LINK includes a multitude of functional safety features ensuring all systems, operators and products are protected during operation.

NORDAC FLEX variable frequency drives are NORD’s most flexible electric drives featuring a modular design and wide range of scalable functions for motor or wall mounting. Optional integral modules such as interfaces for field bus connection, control options and functional safety further extend capabilities. A wide selection of functions and comprehensive range of accessories enable application-specific versions to be configured to exactly match system requirements.

NORDAC ON/ON+ variable frequency drives are a decentralized solution optimized for the common requirements in horizontal conveyor technology. NORDAC ON is designed for use with asynchronous motors whereas NORDAC ON+ is intended for use with synchronous motors and supplements the NORD high-efficiency portfolio of the IE5+ motor generation. Standard integrated functions include sensors via digital inputs, brake management for wear-free brake actuation and POSICON positioning mode. Additionally, the compact design and full pluggability deliver an economic solution for industrial internet of things environments.

Further developments announced

NORD is constantly working to improve and expand on their product offerings. New versions of the NORDAC ON/ON+ are being developed to include safety functions such as SLS, SMS and SSM in addition to the STO and SS1 currently available. Based on the PROFIsafe and FSoE interfaces, integration into existing Ethernet environments and operation as a stand-alone solution will be possible. The NORDAC ON PURE will soon be available for added protection in caustic wash-down environments. It features the state-of-the-art, food-safe NXD tupH Sealed Surface Conversion System, smooth, rounded housing and a reduced number of input/output plug connections. This product will allow NORD to supply complete drive systems made fully from aluminum with strong corrosion resistance comparable to stainless steel.
