Powercast Corp. and Asset Vue are collaborating on a data center solution that will be a customized version of Powercast’s radio frequency identification (RFID)-powered, wire-and-battery-free sensor.
The RFID sensing technology allows for maintenance-free monitoring as it can power itself perpetually without wires or built-in batteries.
RFID in readers is used to connect the internet to any item bearing an RFID tag to allow companies and users to identify and locate items. It can be used in:
- Inventory management
- Logistics
- Retail
The sensor powers itself through wireless RF energy harvesting chips and sensors to enable real-time smart monitoring capable of locating live shipments, tracking the state of perishable good and more.
"Asset Vue wanted an affordable, maintenance-free asset monitoring system for its data center that didn't require sensors to be hardwired or ongoing battery maintenance," said Charles Greene, COO and CTO of Powercast. "They knew our technology did that, so they asked us to customize a system for them; specifically, they needed precise monitoring of extreme temperature and humidity to prevent failure of mission-critical equipment they store on metal server racks, and the ability to quickly locate tagged items on those crowded racks."
