Solid-state microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) startup xMEMS Labs Inc.’s Cowell MEMS tweeter has announced its first commercial deployment in the forms of an AI sports glasses from BleeqUp, a Chinese consumer electronics startup in China.

The AI sports glasses feature a two-way audio architecture in each arm and combines a traditional dynamic woofer for low frequencies with the MEMS tweet for clarity and improved voice intelligibility.

The MEMS tweeter measures 1 mm thick and weighs 56 milligrams, allowing engineers to design AI glasses that are thin and light and don’t sacrifice audio quality. This is important because AI eyewear is rapidly evolving to include:

  • Real-time translation
  • Personal assistants
  • Contextual information overlays

The global smart glasses market is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of more than 22% through 2028, according to market research firm IDC.

The growth is due to new advancements in AI processing, battery efficiency and consumer demand for seamless digital/physical integration.
